The avatar is the 13th shard of Azem who was summoned when Rey took the Reaper job stone. As the Avatar consumed more light aspected aether during Shadowbrinngers, it balanced out the dark aspected aether and the Avatar gained more sentience, mirroring their pre-calamity self.

Trained as a conjurer
Took up some training with the lancers and archer’s guild to round out combat abilities

Joined not long after finishing school/coming of age
Rey had hardly set foot outside of Gridana before joining the Grand Company, and even then, before the battle of Carteneau, she never strayed too far from the city.
Had a love of baking and botany and often helped out in her mother’s bakery.At the Battle of Carteneau, she was stationed with a squadron of Twin Adder units who unfortunately got caught in the thick of the battle. While retreating, Rey and the other mages in the unit poured their aether together to create a barrier to allow others to escape the battlefield.
As other mages ran out of aether, Rey held the line until she was one of the few left.
Only after Louisoix cast his barrier were the Eorzean Alliance soldiers, and Rey, while wounded, to be safe.
Unfortunately, not all was well…
Rey and a few of the other mages in her unit had been experimenting with different techniques to create more powerful barrier magic. While in battle, Rey used one of their untested techniques.The unknown magic, combined with the aether from Bahamut’s attacks, Louisoix’s magic, and the force of the calamity (and the merging of the source and it’s shard) created the perfect recipe to force the shard of Azem to merge with Rey.
The shards merged improperly causing the two minds to merge into one.
(this is one reason G’raha and Rey bond so quickly after SHB)
The finished puzzle of two souls merging caused a significant personality change in Rey. After recovering from her wounds, she left Gridania and her family to figure out who this new “Rey” was.
The predominant memories and personality were reminiscent of “Rey” but the influence of the other soul could not be denied. And some memories were lost with the merge as well.

The Grand Return to Eorzea started in Ul’dah!
In the 5 years since the 7th Umbral Calamity Rey had been adventuring around the lands east of Eorzea. She relearned how to control her aether and took up learning various combat and gathering skills. After taking a great interest in black magic, Rey decided to return to Eorzea to join the Thaumaturges' Guild in Ul’dah to continue her training in the art of black magic.ARR Patch Quests
Rey meet X'rhun Tia and was smitten with Red Magic.
She instantly took to Red Mage and claimed she would never switch to another job. The blend of Black and White magic was the perfect solution for her strange aether circumstance.Rey and Finn reunited when Finn heard of this new “Hero of Eorzea” who sounded a lot like his sister.
Finn worked with Cid and the Sons of Saint Coinach to research the Crystal Tower and met G’raha Tia. He knew immediately Rey and G’raha would get along and dragged Rey to the NOAH site.From the outside, you would have thought that G’raha and Rey had known each other for a long time with how well they got along.
G’raha sacrificing himself to keep the Crystal Tower safe affected her immensely, but she was determined to keep moving on for the sake of the Scions.
With everything else going on with the Crystal Braves and the Royal Banquet, Rey kept her grieving of G’raha to herself. Instead focusing on Alphinaud.
The hospitality and care that Haurchefant showed Rey and Alphinaud gave her the strength to keep going. She will never feel like she thanked Haurchefant enough.

Thancred was the first Scion Rey met while she was starting her adventuring gig in Ul'dah. The two quickly fell into an easy friendship.
They would often hang out and drink together and “shoot the shit”.After being possessed by Lahabrea, Rey and Thancred’s friendship became strained, and even more so after the Royal Banquet. Through HW patches, SB, and SHB, Rey and Thancred’s relationship stayed steady as more than coworkers but not quite friends again. By SHB patches they started to truly get closer as friends. This time stronger.Rey hung out often with Ryne, Gaia, and Urianger during the Eden raids, even when Rey wasn't needed on site.
By DT, they have picked up their old dynamic, except they are closer due to all the time they've spent together.

Y'shtola

Scion

Rey has always had a healthy relationship with Y’shtola, built on respect and admiration of each other’s skills.
This however is strained whenever Y’shtola decides to do something stupid (in Rey’s opinion) that puts Y’shtola at risk. Especially if it includes experimental or risky magic.
Y’Shtola, please stop throwing yourself into the aetherial sea, there are other solutions
On the other hand, Y’shtola has strong opinions on Rey’s decision to practice the art of the Reaper.
As the events of Endwalker unfold, Y’shtola and Rey end up ironing out most of their differences and work together well.

Alisaie

Alisaie also gets the little sibling treatment from Rey, but the two also get to bond over their love of Red Magic.The two can often be found practicing and sparring during downtime. The two have created new techniques to refine the Red Mage arts.Alisaie has a tendency to bring out a more silly and fun side of Rey, especially when it comes to teasing Alphinaud and Finn. The two can be absolute menaces when they get in the mood.Alisaie was the Scion Rey went to see before all the others on the First (excluding Finn who was in the Crystarium).Rey was also the first one that Alisaie truly opened up to about how much Tesleen meant to her. Rey’s understanding and willingness to listen solidified their relationship.

Alphinaud

Rey absolutely adores Alphinaud and treats him like another younger brother.During ARR and the patch quests, Rey found Alphinaud to be incredibly frustrating and “a stuck up child”. She thought giving a teenager the ability to create his own militia was honestly a stupid one, but she resolved to be the most supportive she could while being critical.After the disaster of a Royal Banquet, Rey and Alphinaud bonded very quickly and that was the moment Rey practically adopted the kid into her family.Nothing bonds two people like watching most of your friends die and having your entire structure system fall down around you :)Rey is not ready for the day Alphinaud grows taller than her, but at the same time she is incredibly proud of how he has grown.

G’Raha and Rey got along like two peas in a pod during the CT excavation.The two bonded over their love of learning and would often be found staying up late to go over research (and non CT related items like regional food)At one point Rey started staying in G’raha’s tent due to give them more time to talk (there was a thunderstorm and G’raha offered for her to stay :) )While G’Raha’s drive for adventure is more heroics, his youthful optimism was what drew Rey in.G’Raha’s sacrifice hurt Rey far more than she thought it would, confirming that they became close very fast.As the Crystal Exarch, the two are not close because Rey believes that G’Raha doesn’t remember anything before coming to the First, why would he lie to her about who he was otherwise right?She was so pissed off when she got to the First, but once she saw the Exarch in person she figured out what that nagging feeling was, that she knew him and it was G’raha!She immediately calmed down and she won’t explain why >:) (it’s her crush)When she finds out his plan and sees him after the fight with Hades, she is furious but the relief over seeing him again wins out.While Rey and G’Raha get along very well after SHB, Rey does worry that their relationship is more hinged on Hero Worship and G’Raha’s idolization of Rey as the WOL over as a person. This worry does cause some strain, but they work through it.G’raha is the first person Rey told about her experience during the 7th Calamity and the soul merging that happened during it. G’raha convinces her to tell Finn.By the beginning of Dawntrail they have started to mutually show their affection towards each other more publicly.They have a moment as Rey is leaving on the ship for Tural, and everyone sees ♥Are they in a relationship? Both of them don’t want to say anything for sure but they basically are :)

Xie Lian

Heaven Official's Blessing - MXTX
Rey shares Xie Lian's kind and compassionate nature. I was inspired by Xie Lian's decision to be kind and compassionate despite seeing the worst humanity has to offer. Rey more closely resembles Xie Lian before his third ascension as she gives into anger and lashes out in extreme circumstances. Azem would closely resemble Xie Lian if they had never been sundered.

Judai & Yubel

Yu-Gi-Oh GX
Originally I was inspired by Yugi and Atem, but as I figured out Rey's character, I found more inspiration from Judai and Yubel. This is specifically for the relationship between Rey and her Voidsent Avatar. Much like Yubel, the Avatar was left in isolation on the 13th and lost any semblance of their "humanity". They became fixated on Rey after their pact was made and will act on their own frequently.
